Environmental protection industry makes US$4.9bn in 2004: Chinese government |

BEIJING, June 5 -- China's environmental protection industry generated RMB457.21 billion (US$57 billion) in revenue and RMB39.39 billion in profits in 2004, according to a government white paper issued today by the Information Office of the State Council, China's cabinet.
By the end of 2004, China had 11,623 environmental protection enterprises, each with an annual sales income of more than RMB2 million, from the environmental protection industry, employing a total of 1.6 million workers, says the report.
And between 1996 and 2004, China's investment into environmental pollution control reached RMB952 billion, amounting to 1% of that period's GDP, while spending on environmental protection was RMB1.2 trillion of the RMB27 trillion invested in construction projects since 1996.
"After years of practice, China has formed an industrial system of environmental protection with a basically complete category and certain economic scale," says the report.
